New benefit rules for green cars

4 huhtikuu, 2022

As of July 1, 2022, simpler, and according to many, fairer rules apply to preferential values for new electric and plug-in hybrids.

It has long been difficult to understand the rules for how electric and plug-in hybrids should be preferentially taxed. But now the Riksdag has hammered out a change to this. From mid-year, fixed deductions must be introduced, which gives equal preferential tax for cars with the same price tag.

In the previous regulations, the benefit value was set based on a comparison with a similar car model without electrification . The consequence has been that similar cars with a similar price ultimately receive completely different benefit values.

This discount applies to all electric cars

From 1 July this year, the sums below will be deducted from the Tax Agency's list price. The change applies to cars registered after 1 July 2022.

  • Plug-in hybrids: 140,000 kronerr

  • Gas cars: SEK 100,000

  • Electric cars and hydrogen cars: SEK 350,000

Restriction is set based on new price

In the new regulations, a limit is set so that an electric car with a lower price tag will not receive too large a deduction in relation to the car's new price. The deduction must not be greater than half the car's new price, which means that an electric car that costs SEK 600,000 can only make a deduction of SEK 300,000.

Cars that cost less than SEK 700,000 can therefore only deduct half their new price. Worth noting is that the new rules cover cars that have already been ordered.

Discount for ethanol cars is cancelled

In addition, an adjustment is introduced regarding ethanol cars, they will no longer be counted as an environmental car according to the Swedish Tax Agency. Drivers of ethanol cars cannot therefore make deductions. Nor do you who drive a hybrid car that cannot be charged have the right to make deductions in the new regulations.

Electric cars in the mid-price range are favored

The electric cars that cost closer to the million receive a higher benefit value after July 1 compared to before. Instead, electric cars in the mid-price segment benefit, they will receive a tax reduction of around SEK 150 a month.
